It was Autumn 2014 and the Kilbroney Ramblers returned to south west Donegal to explore the diversity of walks amid the visually stunning scenery there.

Having arrived in Donegal town on a sunny Sunday afternoon and checked into the Abbey Hotel, some of our walkers then took a leisurely stroll along the Bank Walk, where the River Eske flows into Donegal Bay.

Early on Monday morning, we all set out together to hill walk in the Glencolmcille area.  Soon after passing St. Columba's Church, we divided into two groups to walk the Tower Loop, view Skelpoonagh Bay and Glen Head.  There the cliffs drop 200 metres into the Atlantic.  The glorious weather and blue sky created an intense blue sea with dazzling white waves.  The scenes were breath taking.

For Tuesday's walk, most walkers went to Slieve League, where the sea cliffs are among the highest in Europe at 598 metres.  Slieve League is an unforgettable experience – amazing, precipitous sea cliffs with great views over Donegal Bay.  On high, the mist swirled around the walkers.

Less spectacular but extremely pleasant and with views of Donegal Bay, was the Creevy coastal path taken by other walkers on Tuesday.  Starting at the Creevy Pier Hotel, the walk followed a grassy coastal path, yellow painted styles and marker posts along the beautiful shoreline.

Having enjoyed sun, scenery and walking during the day, listened to traditional music and song, and watched brilliant Irish dancing in the evening, and having had a warm welcome and enjoyable stay in the Abbey Hotel – our last morning arrived on Wednesday.

The sun was still shining, the air felt more fresh, Donegal town was bustling, and at Lough Eske all was ever peaceful in the bright, clear light.
